So it’s been a few days now and the list of things I want to write about grows bigger and bigger and bigger each day but when I actually open my laptop to start something, I just can’t find the words…
Ahh, the writer’s block. We’re all familiar with our uninvited guest. Believe it or not it’s not just a phase or a feeling, it has science behind it (it was even in the Harvard gazette in 2004 by William J. Cromie) , some of which will be discussed here.
William J. Cromie stated that creative work involve a push-pull interaction between the frontal and temporal lobes. And what does that mean exactly? Well, in layman terms it means that the mood has to be right. If even one side of your brain is uninterested or unsatisfied, no game.
However to fight this, Shelley Carson, a psychologist at Harvard tried to use light as a defensive measure. How, you might ask. Ever notice when you’re stuck at home too much or the days are grey and gloomy you feel an uneasiness, an unexplainable sadness? Studies suggest that getting some light can help, not only improve but boost, creativity! Don’t believe it? Try it yourself.
I’ll be honest, in my case this was exactly it. I live in a really warm and sunny part of the country and as much as I hate the heat sometimes, I love the evening sunlight, sometime before twilight. However, ever since winter started a month ago, I have barely been able to see the sun at all because of the tight schedule I follow these days. Anyway, today while driving, I felt the warmth of the sun on my face and even though it kind of hurt my eyes a little, it made me happy, which is probably why I’m here right now. Who knew a little sun deprivation would make such a difference right?
The writer’s block is actually a creation block, where you’re basically unable to create anything unique on your own.
There are many other ways to deal with the writer’s block, for instance;
-Try looking for an inspiration, even though it’s wrong to copy someone’s work you can always enjoy someone else's work to search for something that inspires you to create once more.
-Sometimes we seem to be stuck on one thing, maybe you just can’t get the intro right but the perfect body or ending is sitting right there! GO FOR IT! I REPEAT, GO FOR IT! Don’t waste time on something you’re stuck on but move on with what you have, what you can compose without fail.
-Make a rough draft without looking back, I mean rereading. Try to keep on going till the end of what you’re expecting, sure maybe most of it won’t be a masterpiece but I’m sure some of it will be good enough to use or recompose!
-Lastly, do not delay the task at hand. The longer you wait the worse you’ll feel about it and the more anxious you’ll get.Hope this helps you out because it surly helped me! Let me know what tips and trick you have up your sleeve to rid yourself of it!
